Sepia Saturday - 159

In my family archives we have some great photos of days at the beach. Here are just a few of them.

Taken circa 1955 at Brighton Sussex. This is my Grandfather George with Mum who has a rather determined look on her face!

Here is a slightly earlier photo. This one is taken we think at Southend where my Grandfather's sister Gladys lived with her family. This photo was taken in 1949 and has both my Grandparents in it.

  1. I think your mother is trying to make a get away in that first photo and she does look very determined.

    1. Kristin, that is a determined look that I still see on my Mum's face every now and again.

  2. These photos bring back memories. Isn't it strange the way everyone looked the same as others of a similar age? That could have been my family.

    1. Thanks for stopping by Francene. I think it was the fashion of the time. I wonder what celebrity influenced the time? Another post perhaps on another day!

  3. You couldn't mistake the lack of sand on Brighton beach.

  4. I thought the same as Kristin; Mum looks as though she is making a bid for freedom in both photos. It's a good job your grandfather had a tight hold of her!

  5. Did you have to pay for the use of the beach chairs? Does that still happen in England?

    1. Indeed it does. Our local beach front charges £5 for a day!

  6. Here is the USA we don't think of pebbles as being good beach material! In the second pic I note that grandfather still has his shoes on!

    1. Well it was the 1950s! Yes, Grandfather was beach person! Pebbles definetely not good beach material, but it was close to their home.

  7. These are so like photos in my family collection - the style of dress, the poses, the deck chairs - but full of happy memories.

  8. That desire to take a camera out every time a family went to the seaside and the sands was so universal. And thank goodness it was as it has provided us with a wonderfully rich social history of a generation.

  9. Your Mom is cute! On the top photo, is that gravel on the ground or is it grass? I doesn't look like sand.

Maybe your mom didn't like sitting on those rocks for the picture? She sure was cute!

  11. A tickey to hire the chair, so I probably would've sat on the uncomfortable pebbles too, but your mother looks determined to get on the chair!

  12. I am with Kristin and Little Nell. I think the photographer pushed the shutter just in time...
